The Next New York

What will it take for Mayor Zohran Mamdani to turn his platform into policy?

Mayor Mamdani might be the top elected official in New York City, but his agenda will live and die in Albany. In the wake of his victory, New York Focus is launching a three-part public forum series that probes the practical challenges and opportunities of translating his platform into reality, looking specifically at what he will need from the state capitol to enact his agenda. Each session will convene leading policy analysts, civil servants, advocates, and practitioners to examine his three central policy planks: housing, transportation, and child care, with an eye toward how the state legislature and governor will respond. Together, we’ll explore what it will take – politically, financially, and operationally – to deliver on the promises that helped win this election, and how New Yorkers can monitor progress effectively.

Mamdani’s vision for New York includes free child care and “baby baskets” for every newborn. This panel will bring together advocates, educators, and policy experts to discuss what it would take to build a city that truly supports families from birth through high school – and whether there’s money to do it. Together, we’ll examine how these proposals could ease the pressures on parents, reduce inequality, and strengthen the next generation of New Yorkers.

    Panel 2: Transportation
The Next New York: Are we there yet?
January 28, 2026, 7:00 pm, doors open at 6:00 pm

New Yorkers are always in a hurry — and the mayor has pledged to make it easier to get around. This conversation will dive into Mamdani’s proposals for fast, free buses. Panelists will explore the fiscal, political, and logistical hurdles this plan will face, as well as broader questions about what it will take to manage the streets and subways of the country's most bustling city.

    Panel 3: Housing
The Next New York: The rent is too damn high!
February 12, 2026, 7:00 pm, doors open at 6:00 pm
    Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square S

New York City’s housing challenges are among the most complex in the nation. This panel will unpack Zohran Mamdani’s ambitious housing platform, from freezing rent and building deeply affordable homes to cracking down on predatory landlords and ending deed theft. Experts in housing policy, tenant organizing, and real estate development will assess what it would take to turn these ideas into reality, and what structural changes are needed to make housing in New York truly stable and fair.

This panel will be livestreamed on our website and YouTube channel.
